2002 LS1 Overheating, Coolant Loss & Fan Diagnosis
2002 LS1 overheating and coolant-loss diagnosis with clear tests, expected results and stop points before parts replacement.
Verify coolant level and protection
With the engine completely cold, verify coolant level and inspect coolant condition/concentration. Do not open a hot system.
System is full and coolant protection/concentration is appropriate.
Inspect the airflow hardware first
Inspect upper/lower radiator baffles or air deflectors, radiator/condenser faces and fins. Look for missing pieces, damage, packed debris or blocked airflow.
Baffles/deflectors are present and airflow through the heat exchangers is not obstructed.
Pressure-test the cap
Open exact pressure-cap test →Only when cold, remove and clean the cap sealing surface. Use a cooling-system pressure tester to test the cap.
The cap holds its rated pressure for at least 10 seconds and releases when pressure exceeds its rating.
Pressure-test the complete cooling system
Open exact cooling-system pressure test →Install the pressure tester and apply pressure without exceeding the cap rating. Hold the system under observation.
The system holds rated pressure for at least 2 minutes without pressure loss.
Trace coolant loss in a fixed order
Inspect radiator, heater core, pressure cap, recovery tank, hoses, water outlet and water pump. If those are dry, continue to block drain plugs, cylinder-head core plugs, head-gasket/head leakage, throttle-body leakage, block cracks and casting porosity as applicable.
No external or internal loss point is found.
Verify the ECT signal before trusting the gauge
Compare scan-tool ECT to actual engine temperature from a cold start and through warm-up.
ECT changes smoothly and is believable for actual engine temperature.
Command low-speed fan operation
Open exact fan-function test →With a capable scan tool, command the low-speed fan state ON/OFF and observe both fans.
Both fans respond in the commanded low-speed mode.
Command high-speed fan operation
Command high-speed fan operation and observe both fans.
Both fans operate in high-speed mode.
Check belt drive and water-pump condition
Inspect belt tension/drive. Check the water-pump driveshaft/impeller condition and look for evidence of poor circulation.
Belt drive is correct and the pump shows no drive/impeller fault.
Test the thermostat instead of guessing
Open exact thermostat test →Test the thermostat temperature operation. For the 2002 procedure, it should begin opening at 188°F (87°C) and be fully open at 206°F (97°C). The removed glycol check also verifies full opening above rating and complete closing below rating.
Thermostat opens and closes in the specified range.
Check for blocked passages and radiator capacity
After coolant level, pressure integrity, ECT, fans, pump drive and thermostat all pass, inspect for blocked cooling passages, bent/blocked radiator fins and whether the correct radiator is installed.
No restriction/capacity problem is found.

Before you start
Confirm the page scope above, then work through the published checks in order. Use the linked exact-test procedure whenever this page sends you to one.
Modified car?Check first
This diagnostic path is based on the application shown on this page. If the car has non-stock wiring, calibration, engine-management, fuel-system, cooling-system, security, or other related changes, do not assume the stock path matches the car exactly. Verify the circuit and configuration actually present before using a stock result to condemn a component.

Exact tests for this path
Open the full procedure when the diagnostic calls for one, then return here for the next step.
Start here
Follow the tests in order. Use the result you actually get, not the failure you expect to find.
- Confirm this page matches the vehicle and symptom before testing.
- Gather the tools listed on the page before disconnecting anything.
- If a STOP warning appears, do not improvise past it.
- After a repair, repeat the failed test before moving on.
Diagnostic Workpad
Use this as a quick job-side record while you work through the tree. Record what the car actually does before moving to the next branch.
Your notes stay in this browser on this device. They are not sent to F-Body Parts Verdict.
DO NOT REPLACE YET
Do not replace the thermostat, water pump, radiator, fans or cap from an overheating complaint alone. Prove coolant level/containment, circulation, fan/airflow behavior and the actual condition that causes temperature rise.
PARTS VERDICT
Replace only the component whose branch test proves loss of sealing, circulation, airflow or control. Do not use a lower thermostat or earlier fan command to hide an unresolved mechanical cooling fault.
REPAIR → VERIFY
Pressure-test or heat-cycle as appropriate, reproduce idle and road-speed conditions, and confirm temperature remains controlled without coolant loss or recurrence of the original branch failure.
FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code, symptom or commonly failed part is not proof by itself.
