2002 LS1 Pressure-Cap Test

Applies to: 2002 Firebird / Trans Am with the LS1, unless a step below says otherwise.

A weak cap can create coolant-loss and overheating symptoms, so test it before condemning the thermostat, pump or radiator.

Start here

Perform this test exactly as shown, record the result, then use PASS or FAIL to return to the diagnostic tree.

PASS — The test result is in range or the commanded function works.
FAIL — The result is outside the expected condition; follow that branch.
STOP — The next step needs information/equipment not safely covered here.

Diagnostic Workpad

Write down the actual measurement before choosing PASS or FAIL. This keeps one bad assumption from steering the rest of the diagnosis.

SAFETY

Remove the cap only when cold

DO THIS

Let the cooling system cool completely, remove the cap and wash/clean the cap sealing surface.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Cap and sealing surface can be inspected without hot pressure.

PASS → Connect the cap to the pressure tester.
FAIL → Do not proceed until the system is cold.
STEP 1

Test the cap against its own rating

DO THIS

Pressurize the cap with the cooling-system pressure tester.

YOU SHOULD SEE

The cap holds its rated pressure for at least 10 seconds and releases when tester pressure exceeds the cap’s rating.

PASS → Cap passes. Continue with cooling-system pressure testing if the complaint remains.
FAIL → If it will not hold rated pressure or will not release above its rating, cap replacement is supported.

Before choosing a branch: put the measurement or observation in the workpad above. Then choose PASS or FAIL from the result you actually got.

Take the result back to Cooling Diagnosis

Use the result you actually got. Don’t jump to a different branch because it sounds more likely.

TEST PASSEDCap passes → continue to the cooling-system pressure test →TEST FAILEDCap fails → replace the cap and verify the original complaint before going deeper →
After a repair: repeat the test that failed before calling the car fixed. Then verify the original symptom is gone.
