2002 LS1 Thermostat Test

Applies to: 2002 Firebird / Trans Am with the LS1, unless a step below says otherwise.

Test temperature operation instead of replacing the thermostat because the car runs hot or cold.

PAGE SCOPELS12002Use this page only for the model-year/application stated here unless another year is explicitly identified in the published material.

Start here

Perform this test exactly as shown, record the result, then use PASS or FAIL to return to the diagnostic tree.

PASS — The test result is in range or the commanded function works.
FAIL — The result is outside the expected condition; follow that branch.
STOP — The next step needs information/equipment not safely covered here.

Diagnostic Workpad

Write down the actual measurement before choosing PASS or FAIL. This keeps one bad assumption from steering the rest of the diagnosis.

IN-CAR CHECK

Check opening range at the housing

DO THIS

Use an appropriate temperature-indicating method at the thermostat housing while monitoring warm-up. The supplied 2002 procedure used temperature sticks at the thermostat housing.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Thermostat begins opening at about 188°F (87°C) and is fully open by about 206°F (97°C).

PASS → Opening behavior is in the specified range.
FAIL → Measured opening behavior outside the specified range supports thermostat replacement.
BENCH CHECK

Verify a removed thermostat if needed

DO THIS

Suspend the thermostat so it is fully submerged without resting on the container. Heat/agitate the test liquid and compare valve movement with the thermostat’s indicated opening temperature.

YOU SHOULD SEE

The supplied procedure verifies opening when the liquid is roughly 22°F (11°C) above the thermostat’s indicated temperature and complete closing when roughly 10°F (6°C) below it.

PASS → Valve opens and closes fully through the temperature check.
FAIL → Valve sticks, opens late/incompletely or will not close: replacement is supported.
Use safe temperature-testing equipment. Do not hold a thermostat over an open flame or improvise a dangerous heating setup.

Before choosing a branch: put the measurement or observation in the workpad above. Then choose PASS or FAIL from the result you actually got.

Take the result back to Cooling Diagnosis

Use the result you actually got. Don’t jump to a different branch because it sounds more likely.

TEST PASSEDThermostat operation passes → continue the remaining cooling branches →TEST FAILEDThermostat fails the temperature/movement check → replacement is supported →
After a repair: repeat the test that failed before calling the car fixed. Then verify the original symptom is gone.
