2002 LS1 Injector Electrical / Coil Diagnosis

An injector can have an electrical problem, a flow problem, or neither. The electrical test and balance test answer different questions.

APPLICATION: 2002 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1. Exact 2002 injector diagnostic strategy controls.

Electrical operation

  • The injectors receive a voltage feed and the PCM controls each injector by grounding its control circuit.
  • A winding fault can create a misfire without always producing an injector-circuit DTC.

Temperature matters

  • Injector winding resistance changes with injector temperature.
  • Test under the customer complaint condition when a failure appears only hot or cold.

Compare the set

  • The 2002 procedure compares injector resistance against the specified temperature range and against the other injectors.
  • FPV does not publish one universal ohm number outside that test state.

Electrical pass ≠ flow pass

  • If electrical testing does not isolate the complaint, move to injector balance/flow testing.
  • A coil can measure acceptably while the injector still flows differently, leaks or has a mechanical issue.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not condemn an injector because a cylinder misfires. Prove electrical behavior, then flow behavior if needed, and keep fuel pressure/mechanical causes in the tree.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code or symptom identifies the next test, not the part to buy.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
