2002 LS1 Fuel-System Diagnosis

Applies to: 2002 Firebird / Trans Am with the LS1, unless a step on this page says otherwise.

2002 LS1 fuel diagnosis with measured pass/fail branches. A low gauge reading starts the diagnosis; it does not automatically condemn the pump.

APPLICATION: 2002 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am / WS6 with 5.7L LS1.
START HERE
This page is for proving fuel delivery, not listening for pump noise. Separate pressure, retention, low-pressure causes and high-pressure/return causes before replacing the module.
STEP 1

Install the gauge safely and command the pump

Open exact fuel-pressure test →
DO THIS

Ignition OFF before connecting the EFI gauge at the rail service fitting. Keep ignition sources away. Command the pump ON with a capable scan tool and read pressure while it runs.

YOU SHOULD SEE

The dedicated 2002 fuel-system diagnosis calls for 55–60 psi (380–410 kPa).

PASS → 55–60 psi: continue to Step 2.
FAIL → Below 55 psi: go to Step 3. Above 60 psi: go to Step 6.
STEP 2
↑ Diagnostic sections

Check pressure retention after pump shutoff

DO THIS

Command the pump OFF and leave the gauge connected. Watch pressure for one minute.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Pressure may move slightly, then stabilizes rather than rapidly bleeding away.

PASS → Pressure stabilizes: return to the symptom tree that sent you here; basic supply pressure is not the fault shown.
FAIL → Pressure continues falling: the factory tree proceeds to isolation of feed versus return/injector side with proper shutoff adapters. Do not pinch a fuel line. Continue only if you have the correct isolation equipment.
STEP 3
↑ Diagnostic sections

Low pressure: inspect the supply path before the module

DO THIS

Inspect the feed pipe/filter path for restriction, pump electrical connections and grounds, and obvious tank/line damage.

YOU SHOULD SEE

No restriction, voltage/ground connection problem or line damage is found.

PASS → Continue to Step 4.
FAIL → Repair the restriction or electrical/connection fault, then command the pump and recheck 55–60 psi.
STEP 4
↑ Diagnostic sections

Low pressure: inspect in-tank causes

DO THIS

If the external feed and electrical checks pass, inspect the in-tank flex hose, strainer and tank for contamination as the factory branch requires.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Flex hose and strainer are intact and the tank is not contaminated/restricting pickup.

PASS → Continue to Step 5.
FAIL → Repair the hose/strainer/contamination issue and retest pressure before replacing the module.
STEP 5
↑ Diagnostic sections

Condemn the pump only after the branch points back to it

DO THIS

Only after the feed path, connections/grounds, in-tank hose/strainer and required isolation checks pass should the pump/module become the remaining supported low-pressure cause.

YOU SHOULD SEE

The preceding low-pressure causes have been eliminated and pressure remains below specification.

PASS → Pump/module replacement is now supported; verify 55–60 psi after repair.
FAIL → If any prerequisite was not actually tested, go back and test it. “Low pressure” by itself is not enough to skip the branch.
STEP 6
↑ Diagnostic sections

High pressure: inspect the return path first

DO THIS

Inspect the return pipe and T-connection for restriction or damage before condemning the regulator.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Return path is open and undamaged.

PASS → The next factory isolation requires the proper adapter/equipment; continue only with that setup.
FAIL → Restriction found: repair it and recheck pressure.
STEP 7
↑ Diagnostic sections

After any fuel repair, verify the original symptom

DO THIS

Reassemble safely, command/run the pump, verify pressure again, check for leaks, then repeat the original start/drivability complaint.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Pressure is in specification, there are no leaks, and the original symptom is corrected.

PASS → Repair is confirmed.
FAIL → If pressure is now correct but the symptom remains, return to the diagnostic tree that sent you here. Do not keep replacing fuel parts.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →

Modified car?Check first

This diagnostic path is based on the application shown on this page. If the car has non-stock wiring, calibration, engine-management, fuel-system, cooling-system, security, or other related changes, do not assume the stock path matches the car exactly. Verify the circuit and configuration actually present before using a stock result to condemn a component.

Follow the tests in order. Use the result you actually get, not the failure you expect to find.

PASS — The test result is in range or the commanded function works.
FAIL — The result is outside the expected condition; follow that branch.
STOP — The next step needs information/equipment not safely covered here.

Ready

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not replace the pump, regulator, filter or injectors from a single pressure observation. Follow the page’s exact-year test state and separate electrical supply, restriction, pressure control, leakage and delivery capacity.

PARTS VERDICT

The pump or pressure-control component earns replacement only when the applicable test proves it cannot maintain the required system behavior with its power, ground and plumbing verified.

REPAIR → VERIFY

Repeat the same key-on/idle/load or restart condition used to expose the fault and confirm pressure behavior is stable, leakage is absent and the original drivability complaint is gone.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE

SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code, symptom or commonly failed part is not proof by itself.
