2002 LS1 Cooling-System Pressure Test
Use this when coolant loss or overheating points toward a leak. The test is done cold and pressure must never be taken above the cap rating.
Start here
Perform this test exactly as shown, record the result, then use PASS or FAIL to return to the diagnostic tree.
- Confirm this page matches the vehicle and symptom before testing.
- Gather the tools listed on the page before disconnecting anything.
- If a STOP warning appears, do not improvise past it.
- After a repair, repeat the failed test before moving on.
Diagnostic Workpad
Write down the actual measurement before choosing PASS or FAIL. This keeps one bad assumption from steering the rest of the diagnosis.

Start with a cold cooling system
Do not remove the pressure cap while the engine/radiator is hot. Let the system cool completely before opening it.
System can be opened without hot pressure or steam.
Verify the cap before pressure-testing the system
Inspect/test the pressure cap first. A cap that cannot hold its own rating can mimic a system leak.
Cap passes its rated-pressure test.
Pressurize only to the cap rating
Use the pressure tester to apply pressure to the cooling system. Do not exceed the pressure-cap rating.
The system holds rated pressure for at least 2 minutes with no gauge loss.
Take the result back to Cooling Diagnosis
Use the result you actually got. Don’t jump to a different branch because it sounds more likely.
TEST PASSEDSystem holds pressure → continue with airflow, fan, circulation or thermostat checks →TEST FAILEDSystem loses pressure → find and repair the leak before deeper overheating diagnosis →
