2002 LS1 Charging-Circuit Voltage-Drop Test
This test separates a bad cable/connection from a generator problem. Do it under load; unloaded voltage checks can miss resistance.
Start here
Perform this test exactly as shown, record the result, then use PASS or FAIL to return to the diagnostic tree.
- Confirm this page matches the vehicle and symptom before testing.
- Gather the tools listed on the page before disconnecting anything.
- If a STOP warning appears, do not improvise past it.
- After a repair, repeat the failed test before moving on.
Diagnostic Workpad
Write down the actual measurement before choosing PASS or FAIL. This keeps one bad assumption from steering the rest of the diagnosis.

Load the charging system
With the battery confirmed serviceable, run the engine and apply the charging-system load used for the test. Hold engine speed at about 2,500 RPM while the loaded measurement is made.
Charging system is operating under a stable electrical load.
Measure generator output-side drop
Measure voltage drop from the generator output terminal to the battery positive terminal while the system remains loaded.
No more than 0.5 V across the output path.
Measure generator ground-side drop
Measure voltage drop from battery negative to the generator metal housing while the same loaded condition is maintained.
No more than 0.5 V across the ground path.
Take the result back to Starting & Electrical
Use the result you actually got. Don’t jump to a different branch because it sounds more likely.
TEST PASSEDBoth loaded cable paths are 0.5 V or less → continue generator/control diagnosis if output is still wrong →TEST FAILEDEither path exceeds 0.5 V → repair that cable/connection before condemning the generator →
