2002 LS1 Battery & Terminal Inspection Test

Applies to: 2002 Firebird / Trans Am with the LS1, unless a step below says otherwise.

Use this before blaming the starter, alternator or a parasitic draw. A weak battery or poor side-terminal connection can make every test after it misleading.

PAGE SCOPELS12002Use this page only for the model-year/application stated here unless another year is explicitly identified in the published material.
Published year references on this page: LS1 · 2002. Use the year-specific material shown on the page rather than assuming every item applies across the full engine generation.

Start here

Perform this test exactly as shown, record the result, then use PASS or FAIL to return to the diagnostic tree.

PASS — The test result is in range or the commanded function works.
FAIL — The result is outside the expected condition; follow that branch.
STOP — The next step needs information/equipment not safely covered here.

Diagnostic Workpad

Write down the actual measurement before choosing PASS or FAIL. This keeps one bad assumption from steering the rest of the diagnosis.

Inspect the battery before using a tester

DO THIS

Look for a cracked, broken or damaged case and obvious leakage. Compare the battery’s cold-cranking and reserve-capacity ratings to the correct vehicle requirement.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Battery case is intact and the battery is the correct capacity for the car.

PASS → Continue to the cable-connection checks.
FAIL → Replace a physically damaged or incorrectly rated battery before continuing.
STEP 2

Check whether either cable connector can rotate

DO THIS

Ignition OFF. With light finger pressure, try to rotate the negative side-terminal connector, then repeat on the positive connector.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Neither cable connector rotates on the battery terminal.

PASS → Continue to the tester step.
FAIL → Disconnect and inspect that connection. Look for a deformed/overlong bolt, debris in the terminal, corrosion or damage to the terminal face/cable ring. Clean or repair it before retesting.
The supplied 2002 procedure uses 10 N·m (88 lb-in) as the check value when verifying the torque required to loosen the existing side-terminal bolt, and 15 N·m (11 lb-ft) when tightening the cable bolt after service.

Battery-test with clean contact

DO THIS

Turn all electrical loads OFF. Connect a capable battery tester directly to clean battery-terminal contact points and follow the tester’s battery test sequence.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Tester reports the battery passes.

PASS → Battery condition is supported. Continue into the symptom-specific starting, charging or draw test.
FAIL → Confirm the connections again; if the battery fails the repeat test, battery replacement is supported.

Before choosing a branch: put the measurement or observation in the workpad above. Then choose PASS or FAIL from the result you actually got.

Take the result back to Starting & Electrical

Use the result you actually got. Don’t jump to a different branch because it sounds more likely.

TEST PASSEDBattery and terminal connections pass → continue the starting/charging branch →TEST FAILEDBattery or terminal connection failed → repair it, verify the repair, then restart the symptom check →
After a repair: repeat the test that failed before calling the car fixed. Then verify the original symptom is gone.
