2002 LS1 Thermostat Test
Test temperature operation instead of replacing the thermostat because the car runs hot or cold.
Start here
Perform this test exactly as shown, record the result, then use PASS or FAIL to return to the diagnostic tree.
- Confirm this page matches the vehicle and symptom before testing.
- Gather the tools listed on the page before disconnecting anything.
- If a STOP warning appears, do not improvise past it.
- After a repair, repeat the failed test before moving on.
Diagnostic Workpad
Write down the actual measurement before choosing PASS or FAIL. This keeps one bad assumption from steering the rest of the diagnosis.

Check opening range at the housing
Use an appropriate temperature-indicating method at the thermostat housing while monitoring warm-up. The supplied 2002 procedure used temperature sticks at the thermostat housing.
Thermostat begins opening at about 188°F (87°C) and is fully open by about 206°F (97°C).
Verify a removed thermostat if needed
Suspend the thermostat so it is fully submerged without resting on the container. Heat/agitate the test liquid and compare valve movement with the thermostat’s indicated opening temperature.
The supplied procedure verifies opening when the liquid is roughly 22°F (11°C) above the thermostat’s indicated temperature and complete closing when roughly 10°F (6°C) below it.
Take the result back to Cooling Diagnosis
Use the result you actually got. Don’t jump to a different branch because it sounds more likely.
