Modified-Car Failure Trees
These trees exist for the car that is in front of you today. The first job is separating a modification’s normal effect from a real fault the modification created or exposed.
Cammed rough idle vs actual misfire
- Document cam/tune and expected idle behavior.
- Compare misfire pattern by cylinder, load and temperature.
- A rough idle alone may be expected; repeatable cylinder-specific misfire, loss of power or a new pattern is not automatically “the cam.”
Long-tubes / O2 / lean complaint
- Inspect collector and upstream exhaust leaks before blaming O2 sensors.
- Check O2 extension routing/terminals and sensor placement.
- Compare bank trims and verify MAF/fuel pressure/injector characterization before correcting the tune around a hardware fault.
Injector / MAF / tune mismatch
- Confirm injector part/data installed in the calibration.
- Confirm MAF type/housing and calibration strategy.
- Do not tune around a failing fuel supply or vacuum leak.
Boosted fuel-delivery complaint
- Verify fuel pressure behavior under the same load that creates the complaint.
- Separate pump electrical supply, regulator/reference strategy, injector capacity/characterization and calibration command.
- Never use an idle pressure pass as proof of adequate delivery under boost.
VATS delete / PCM swap
- Identify PCM hardware, operating system/calibration and how theft deterrent was changed.
- No-start after a swap can be calibration/security/power/ground/serial-data related; do not default to starter/fuel-pump replacement.
Accessory pulley / charging complaint
- Record crank/alternator pulley changes and belt routing.
- Test charging under the actual idle/accessory load where the complaint occurs.
- Do not treat a manufacturer pulley percentage as universal charging proof.
Electric water pump / cooling
- Verify pump electrical supply, controller/relay strategy and operation during the failed condition.
- Confirm fan strategy and actual coolant circulation.
- A working electric pump does not prove adequate airflow or system sealing.
Solid mounts / NVH
- Establish whether the vibration is new, speed-related, RPM-related or load-direction related.
- Solid mounts can transmit more normal engine/drivetrain vibration, but they do not excuse a new driveline-frequency vibration or contact condition.
Lowered car / driveline vibration
- Record ride height, torque-arm mount, pinion/driveshaft/rear changes and exhaust clearance.
- Check whether vibration follows road speed, engine RPM or acceleration load.
- Look for changed geometry/contact before replacing the transmission or rear.
Rear swap / ABS / TCS
- Identify rear assembly, reluctor/tone-wheel/sensor hardware, brakes and wiring actually installed.
- Compare wheel-speed data side-to-side before replacing the EBCM.
- A mechanically functional rear can still be electronically incompatible.
Clutch/hydraulic shift complaint
- Prove clutch release before condemning the T56.
- Document flywheel/clutch/master/slave/release geometry and whether the transmission is stock T56 or Magnum-F.
Converter/TCC after modifications
- Confirm commanded TCC state versus actual slip.
- Document converter, cam, rear gear, tire size and lockup calibration.
- Hunting or dropout can be calibration/combination behavior; commanded-on slip still requires hydraulic/converter diagnosis.
DO NOT REPLACE YET
On a modified car, do not condemn a component until the installed configuration, calibration assumptions, shared power and grounds, mechanical compatibility, and the symptom under the actual operating condition have been measured and isolated. A modification can invalidate a factory assumption without proving a failed part.
AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN
Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
Diagnose the car that exists today
These paths turn common modification checkpoints into complete symptom → test → isolate → prove → parts verdict → repair → verify journeys.
CLUTCH / SHIFT HYDRAULIC DIAGNOSTICS
4L60E MODIFIED-CAR DIAGNOSTICS
Converter and tune complaints now split command, calibration, hydraulic apply and internal capacity before parts are condemned.
Modified LS1 Fueling / Airflow Diagnostics
Proof-first journeys for injector, fuel-system, MAF/intake and long-tube/O₂ changes.
Modified Ignition / Cooling / Electrical Diagnostics
Post-modification faults now split power, ground, command, calibration and component failure before replacement.
Dynamic Brake / T56 Electronics / Vehicle Identity
New proof-first paths cover dynamic wheel/caliper and brake-hose fitment, uneven pad wear, Magnum reverse lockout/VSS/reverse lights, and VIN-versus-installed-configuration checks.
LT1 + DRIVETRAIN DIAGNOSTICS
Proof-first modified LT1 and drivetrain diagnostic paths. Identify the installed hardware before applying a factory-year procedure.
