Wheel or Caliper Contact After a Big-Brake Upgrade

Diagnose static or dynamic wheel-to-caliper contact after a brake conversion by proving barrel, spoke and mounted-wheel clearance before driving.

APPLICATION: 1993–2002 F-body with non-stock front calipers/rotors or wheels.
MODIFIED-CAR / AFTERMARKET EVIDENCE · VERIFY INSTALLED HARDWARE

1 · STOP DRIVING IF CONTACT EXISTS

  • Any witness marks, scraping, heat or intermittent contact after a brake/wheel change is a stop condition. Do not assume light contact will self-clear.

2 · USE THE ACTUAL KIT TEMPLATE

  • Use the brake manufacturer’s wheel-clearance template for the exact kit, print it at verified 1:1 scale and check the actual wheel. Wheel diameter alone does not prove spoke or barrel clearance.

3 · CHECK THE MOUNTED WHEEL

  • Temporarily install the wheel with the intended hub/rotor/spacer stack and torque it correctly. Rotate it through a full revolution and inspect the complete caliper envelope.

4 · RECHECK AFTER HARDWARE CHANGES

  • A different rotor hat, spacer, wheel, caliper bridge, pad stack or hub can change clearance. Recheck whenever the installed stack changes.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not grind calipers, add unverified spacers or order different wheels until the exact interference location and installed stack are proven.

PARTS VERDICT

Correct the actual fitment conflict with a manufacturer-supported wheel, rotor/hat, bracket or spacer solution. Never treat wheel diameter as the only fitment measurement.

REPAIR → VERIFY

After correction, torque the wheel, rotate it freely, verify no marks through the complete caliper envelope, then perform a controlled low-speed brake test and reinspect.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. Modified hardware changes the test plan; it does not prove the failed part.
