2002 LS1 Misfire / P0300 Diagnosis

The LS1 PCM can show current cylinder misfire activity before a history DTC proves a part. Use the pattern to isolate the system.

APPLICATION: 2002 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1. Exact 2002 ignition and scan-data strategy controls.

Read the pattern, not just the code

  • Save freeze-frame/failure records.
  • Watch current misfire counters by cylinder under the complaint condition.
  • A group of cylinders on one bank points you toward shared power/ground/feed or bank-specific causes before eight individual parts.

Ignition is individual—but feeds are shared

  • Each cylinder has its own ignition coil and PCM control circuit.
  • Each bank also depends on shared ignition voltage/ground paths, so multiple cylinders on one side can be a shared-circuit problem.

Fuel branch

  • Verify fuel pressure when the miss occurs.
  • Use injector electrical testing and the balance test to distinguish an electrical coil fault from a flow problem.

Air / exhaust / mechanical branch

  • Check unmetered air, MAF/intake installation and exhaust leaks that can distort mixture feedback.
  • If spark and fuel are proven, check compression, valvetrain and other base-engine causes.

Modified-car branch

  • Document camshaft, tune, injectors, MAF configuration, long-tubes/O2 extensions, fuel system and forced induction before applying stock expectations.
  • A lumpy idle may be intentional; a cylinder-specific counter that climbs under load still deserves diagnosis.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not shotgun coils. A single-cylinder miss may follow a coil/wire/plug swap; a bank or multi-cylinder pattern may be a shared feed, fuel, air or mechanical problem.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code or symptom identifies the next test, not the part to buy.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not replace coils, plugs, injectors, sensors or the PCM from a misfire code/count alone. Use the page’s branch tests to prove whether the fault is cylinder-specific, bank-wide, mechanical, fuel, ignition or control-related first.

PARTS VERDICT

A component earns replacement only when the applicable branch test proves that component or its circuit cannot perform correctly. If the evidence points to wiring, fuel delivery, mechanical condition or calibration, repair that cause instead.

REPAIR → VERIFY

Clear only the evidence you intentionally reset, then reproduce the original idle/load/RPM condition. Confirm the misfire no longer accumulates, drivability is restored and no related DTC returns.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE

SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code, symptom or commonly failed part is not proof by itself.
