Rear Axle Off-Center or Tire Rub After Lowering

Diagnose a rear axle that sits off-center or creates one-sided tire rub after lowering, panhard-bar or rear-axle changes.

APPLICATION: 1993–2002 F-body with altered ride height, panhard bar, rear axle, wheel/tire fitment or rear suspension geometry.
MODIFIED-CAR / AFTERMARKET EVIDENCE · VERIFY INSTALLED HARDWARE

1 · MEASURE THE CAR AT LOADED RIDE HEIGHT

  • Centering must be evaluated with the car settled at its actual ride height on level ground.
  • Compare tire-to-body and wheel-to-inner-clearance side-to-side; do not diagnose from visual fender gap alone.
  • Document wheel width/offset, tire size and ride height because fitment can mimic axle mis-centering.

2 · INSPECT THE PANHARD SYSTEM

  • Verify panhard bar, mounts and bushings/rod ends are secure and compatible with the installed axle.
  • Lowering changes the relationship between the chassis and axle; an adjustable bar can provide centering only if the rest of the geometry and mounts are sound.
  • Check for bent/damaged brackets before adjusting around them.

3 · SEPARATE CENTERING FROM WHEEL-FITMENT PROBLEMS

  • If axle measurements are centered but one tire still rubs, investigate wheel offset, tire section width, body tolerance and local interference.
  • If the axle is displaced, correct the lateral-location system before grinding bodywork or buying narrower tires.
  • Aftermarket axle width must also be confirmed; not every housing is factory width.

4 · RECHECK THROUGH SUSPENSION TRAVEL

  • Static centering does not guarantee dynamic clearance. Inspect both sides through safe suspension movement after adjustment.
  • Confirm brake hoses, ABS wiring and exhaust still have adequate movement/clearance.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not buy wheels, tires or a new rear axle until you measure actual axle centering, wheel fitment and panhard/mount condition at loaded ride height.

PARTS VERDICT

Correct the proven panhard/mount/axle-width issue or wheel-fitment mismatch. Do not use panhard adjustment to conceal a bent mount or wrong-width housing.

REPAIR → VERIFY

Settle the car, remeasure both sides, torque/secure hardware per component instructions and verify clearance through controlled suspension movement.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. Modified hardware changes the test plan; it does not prove the failed part.
