1997 LT1 Fuel-Pressure Diagnosis

Use the exact 1997 pressure test state, then separate pressure generation, pressure retention and pressure under load.

APPLICATION: 1997 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L VIN P LT1. 1997 factory SFI fuel system only.

Pressure low does not equal bad pump

Separate pump output from feed/ground, filter/restriction, regulator behavior and in-tank leakage before condemning the pump.

Exact 1997 KOEO range

With the ignition ON and the pump running, the 1997 Camaro/Firebird LT1 factory procedure specifies 41–47 psi.

Leak-down threshold

The 1997 procedure treats a drop greater than 5 psi in 10 minutes as excessive and lists the pump check valve/flex pipe, regulator valve/seat and injector leakage as possible paths.

Diagnostic sequence

  1. Confirm the exact 1997 LT1 application and connect a suitable EFI pressure gauge safely.
  2. Measure KOEO pressure while the pump is actually running.
  3. If pressure is low, prove electrical supply/ground and inspect restriction/regulator branches before pump replacement.
  4. If pressure is correct but falls rapidly after shutdown, isolate the leak path rather than assuming the pump check valve.
  5. If the complaint occurs under acceleration, cruise or hard cornering, watch whether pressure falls during the symptom. The factory procedure notes that pressure drop under load can create lean surge, power loss or misfire.
  6. After repair, repeat the same pressure test and reproduce the original load condition.

Reference-pulse interaction

The 1997 PCM keeps the pump running while cranking/running only while it receives engine reference pulses. A no-start with pump prime but no continued pump operation can therefore belong to the distributor/reference branch rather than the pump itself.

FPV RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. Do not turn a symptom, DTC or catalog fitment label into a parts order.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not replace the pump, regulator, filter or injectors from a single pressure observation. Follow the page’s exact-year test state and separate electrical supply, restriction, pressure control, leakage and delivery capacity.

PARTS VERDICT

The pump or pressure-control component earns replacement only when the applicable test proves it cannot maintain the required system behavior with its power, ground and plumbing verified.

REPAIR → VERIFY

Repeat the same key-on/idle/load or restart condition used to expose the fault and confirm pressure behavior is stable, leakage is absent and the original drivability complaint is gone.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE

SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code, symptom or commonly failed part is not proof by itself.
