1997 LT1 Distributor Reference Signals

The distributor is both a spark-distribution device and a two-channel optical timing input to the PCM. Diagnose those jobs separately.

APPLICATION: 1997 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L VIN P LT1. Later pin-drive, ventilated distributor architecture.

Two optical inputs

Factory description identifies high resolution at 360 pulses per camshaft revolution and low resolution at 8 pulses per camshaft revolution. Both reference circuits toggle between approximately 0 and 5 V as the camshaft turns.

PCM compares them

The PCM can detect loss of one timing input by comparing the two. That is why a distributor/reference DTC should be diagnosed as a circuit-and-signal problem, not as an automatic distributor verdict.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Prove power, ground and both signals

Before distributor replacement, verify the shielded harness, optical-sensor power/ground and whether each reference channel is actually switching during the failure.

What each observation means

FPV RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. Do not turn a symptom, DTC or catalog fitment label into a parts order.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
