Cammed LT1 Rough Idle, Surge or Stall Diagnosis

Keep mechanical integrity, vacuum leaks, injector/fuel modeling, ignition reference and calibration separate on a cammed LT1.

APPLICATION: Modified 1993–1997 LT1 F-body with aftermarket camshaft/valvetrain changes and rough idle, surge, stall or poor restart.
MODIFIED-CAR / AFTERMARKET EVIDENCE · VERIFY INSTALLED HARDWARE

1 · ESTABLISH MECHANICAL BASELINE

  • Confirm the engine is mechanically sound and the valvetrain/cam installation is not creating a cylinder-specific problem before tuning around it.

2 · CHECK UNMETERED AIR / VACUUM

  • Camshaft changes alter manifold vacuum, but they do not make intake leaks acceptable. Inspect the actual air path and vacuum connections.

3 · VERIFY IGNITION REFERENCE

  • Keep distributor/Optispark reference and secondary ignition in the test tree, especially when the symptom worsens with heat.

4 · VERIFY FUEL MODEL BEFORE AIRFLOW TUNING

  • Injector characterization and pressure must be credible before changing airflow/idle calibration to chase trims.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not replace the IAC/MAF/distributor or keep adding fuel because a cammed LT1 idles poorly. Prove mechanical, air, ignition and fuel branches first.

PARTS VERDICT

Repair the proven mechanical/electrical/fuel fault or calibrate the known-good combination; parts replacement follows proof, not the camshaft symptom.

REPAIR → VERIFY

Verify cold start, hot restart, idle with accessories, decel-to-idle and normal transition without recurrence.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. Modified-car data changes the test plan; it does not automatically condemn the part named in a code or symptom.
