LS1 Goes Lean Under Load After Fuel-System Changes

Separate pump capacity, voltage drop, restriction, pressure control and calibration when an LS1 looks normal at idle but goes lean as load rises.

APPLICATION: 1998–2002 LS1 F-body with modified pump, wiring, regulator, rails, lines or injectors. Do not apply stock pressure assumptions to a converted return/boost-referenced system without verifying its architecture.

1 · REPRODUCE THE LOAD FAILURE SAFELY

  • Log the exact RPM/load/temperature point where the mixture or pressure trend changes; do not continue a pull if fuel delivery is clearly falling away.
  • Compare the failure with system voltage and commanded fueling so a low-voltage event is not mistaken for an injector calibration issue.

2 · MEASURE PRESSURE WHERE THE FAILURE OCCURS

  • A stable idle pressure does not prove the system can maintain required delivery at load.
  • Interpret rail pressure against manifold pressure and the actual regulator strategy; rail pressure alone can mislead on a modified return or boost-referenced system.

3 · CHECK PUMP ELECTRICAL SUPPLY

  • Measure voltage drop in the pump power and ground path under the condition that loads the pump.
  • Aeromotive specifically warns that pump performance depends on avoiding voltage loss through wiring.

4 · SEPARATE CAPACITY, RESTRICTION AND CONTROL

  • Inspect filter/line restrictions, pickup/tank supply, regulator/return sizing and pump temperature/noise before condemning the pump.
  • If pressure and effective injector pressure remain correct while commanded fueling is wrong, move toward injector/air-model/calibration diagnosis.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not replace the pump just because the car is lean at wide-open throttle. Prove whether effective pressure falls, pump voltage falls, a restriction appears, or commanded fueling is wrong.

PARTS VERDICT

Replace or resize the component only after the failed branch is measured: wiring/relay for voltage loss, restriction for flow loss, regulator/return for control failure, or pump when supply and control are correct but delivery cannot be maintained.

REPAIR → VERIFY

Repeat the same load point with pressure and voltage monitored, confirm the lean trend is gone without unsafe enrichment elsewhere, and verify no new fuel-delivery DTC or hot-pressure problem appears.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. Modified-car data changes the test plan; it does not automatically condemn the part named in a code or log.
