Slave / Release Bearing Leak or Overtravel After Clutch Swap

Diagnose a leaking slave cylinder or hydraulic release bearing after clutch, flywheel, bellhousing or transmission changes without automatically blaming the new slave.

APPLICATION: Modified 1993–2002 F-body using an internal slave/hydraulic release bearing or conversion release system.
MODIFIED-CAR / AFTERMARKET EVIDENCE · VERIFY INSTALLED HARDWARE

1 · STOP IF FLUID IS ESCAPING

  • Do not continue repeated pedal strokes if the release bearing/slave is visibly leaking or travel is uncontrolled.
  • Record whether the leak began immediately after assembly, after adjustment, or after initial driving.

2 · VERIFY INSTALLED STACK

  • Identify clutch/flywheel/bellhousing/transmission/release-bearing combination.
  • Release-bearing clearance or stack height is an installation measurement; a mixed stack must be measured to the component maker’s procedure.

3 · CHECK FOR TOO MUCH AND TOO LITTLE CLEARANCE

  • Too much initial clearance can demand excessive piston travel to release the clutch.
  • Too little clearance can preload the clutch/release bearing. Neither condition is proven from pedal feel alone.

4 · SEPARATE DAMAGE FROM ROOT CAUSE

  • If the bearing seal has failed, still determine whether geometry, pedal/master travel or installation damage caused the failure before installing another unit.
  • Inspect lines and fittings so a remote leak is not misidentified as the internal bearing.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not condemn a transmission, clutch, master cylinder, slave/release bearing or shifter until the installed geometry, hydraulic behavior and the exact failure state have been separated.

PARTS VERDICT

A leaking release bearing/slave earns replacement, but the replacement should not be installed until the geometry and travel that may have caused the failure are verified.

REPAIR → VERIFY

Measure/setup the replacement system to its manufacturer’s procedure, bleed it, verify controlled release without overtravel, then recheck for leakage after heat cycling and road use.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. Modified hardware changes the test plan; it does not prove the failed part.
