Brake Hose Contact or Stretch After a Caliper Swap
Prove brake-hose length, twist and routing at full steering and suspension travel after a caliper or big-brake conversion.
APPLICATION: 1993–2002 F-body with aftermarket calipers, braided hoses, relocated hose brackets or changed suspension geometry.
MODIFIED-CAR / AFTERMARKET EVIDENCE · VERIFY INSTALLED HARDWARE
1 · INSPECT BEFORE ROAD TESTING
- Look for twist, kinks, abrasion, stretched hose, loose retention and contact with tire, wheel, rotor, control arm or spring. Any damaged hose is a stop condition.
2 · TURN LOCK TO LOCK
- With the suspension safely supported as appropriate, verify hose slack and routing from steering lock to lock. Wilwood specifically requires enough line for full steering range without contact.
3 · CHECK SUSPENSION TRAVEL
- Confirm the hose cannot become taut or rub as the suspension moves through its usable travel. Lowering and relocation brackets can change the hose path even when steering clearance looks acceptable.
4 · VERIFY FITTINGS / RETENTION
- Use the fittings and retention method specified for the installed caliper/hose system; a hose that seals but is poorly routed is not a finished installation.
DO NOT REPLACE YET
Do not blame a caliper for a soft pedal, pull or leak until the hose itself is proven undamaged, untwisted and correctly routed through steering and suspension travel.
PARTS VERDICT
Replace any abraded, kinked, stretched or leaking hose. Correct routing, fitting orientation and retention before installing another hose.
REPAIR → VERIFY
Bleed as required, check for leaks under pedal pressure, cycle steering and suspension clearance again, then perform a controlled low-speed brake test and reinspect.
FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. Modified hardware changes the test plan; it does not prove the failed part.
