2002 Firebird VTD / PASS-Key Diagnosis

Applies to: 2002 Firebird / Trans Am with the LS1, unless a step on this page says otherwise.

2002 VTD/PASS-Key diagnosis built around what the SECURITY light actually does, tamper mode, fail-enable and stored-code routing.

APPLICATION: 2002 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am / WS6. This page separates Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) from the separate Content Theft Deterrent alarm system.
START HERE
VTD diagnosis starts with SECURITY behavior, the tamper timer and BCM codes. A resistor key does not make every no-start a PASS-Key failure.
STEP 1

Use SECURITY behavior to choose the branch

DO THIS

Reproduce the complaint with the same key and watch the SECURITY indicator while turning to START.

YOU SHOULD SEE

You can classify the result: normal indicator, flashing with inhibit, or SECURITY staying on while the car still starts.

PASS → Normal SECURITY behavior with normal cranking: VTD is not yet proven; use the normal starting/no-start tree.
FAIL → Flashing/inhibited: continue to Step 2. Starts but SECURITY stays on: go to Step 4.

Allow the tamper timer to finish

DO THIS

If the BCM reads the wrong key resistance, the 2002 system description allows a tamper mode of about 3 minutes that disables starter and fuel injection while SECURITY flashes. Stop cycling the key and let the timer expire.

YOU SHOULD SEE

After the timer, retry with the correct key under the same conditions.

PASS → Starts after the timer: investigate intermittent key/resistance reading before replacing modules.
FAIL → Still inhibited/flashing: continue to Step 3.

Read BCM theft-deterrent codes before touching parts

DO THIS

Scan the BCM and record VTD codes. Keep PCM codes too. P1626/P1629 can be part of the fuel-enable/key-recognition path.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Stored codes and SECURITY behavior identify a VTD branch that can be followed with exact circuit information.

PASS → Proceed with the exact 2002 code/circuit test.
FAIL → No VTD code and normal SECURITY behavior: return to normal starting/no-start diagnosis; VTD has not been proven.
STEP 4

Understand fail-enable

DO THIS

The 2002 description allows fail-enable when the BCM previously recognized the correct resistance and the PASS-Key circuit later opens/shorts. In that state the SECURITY lamp can remain on while the vehicle continues to start.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Vehicle starts and runs even though SECURITY remains illuminated.

PASS → Treat this as a VTD circuit/indicator fault, not a current start-inhibit. Diagnose it rather than installing a blind bypass.
FAIL → Vehicle is actually inhibited: return to the stored-code branch and use the exact circuit test.

Know what the system is deciding before bypassing anything

DO THIS

The key resistor/contact circuit is read by the theft-deterrent system; the BCM decides whether the start is authorized and participates in the fuel-enable/start authorization path. A failure can therefore look different from a normal fuel or starter failure.

YOU SHOULD SEE

Symptom, SECURITY behavior and stored codes agree with the same branch.

PASS → Only now is component/circuit-specific VTD diagnosis justified.
FAIL → If those three pieces do not agree, do not force the car into a VTD diagnosis just because it has a resistor key.

Modified car?Check first

This diagnostic path is based on the application shown on this page. If the car has non-stock wiring, calibration, engine-management, fuel-system, cooling-system, security, or other related changes, do not assume the stock path matches the car exactly. Verify the circuit and configuration actually present before using a stock result to condemn a component.

Follow the tests in order. Use the result you actually get, not the failure you expect to find.

PASS — The test result is in range or the commanded function works.
FAIL — The result is outside the expected condition; follow that branch.
STOP — The next step needs information/equipment not safely covered here.
