Cammed LS1 Rough Idle, Stall or Misfire Diagnosis
Separate expected cammed idle behavior from a real ignition, fueling, air-measurement, mechanical or calibration fault before buying parts.
1 · ESTABLISH THE INSTALLED COMBINATION
- Record camshaft, valve-spring, intake/MAF, injector, exhaust and calibration changes.
- Ask whether the complaint began immediately after the cam/tune work or appeared later.
- Save DTCs and a repeatable log before clearing codes or changing the tune.
2 · CLASSIFY THE COMPLAINT
- A deliberately lopey idle is not the same thing as a repeatable cylinder-specific misfire.
- Separate idle-only roughness from load misfire, hot restart, decel stall, brake-vacuum complaint or low-voltage behavior.
- If the engine is mechanically noisy, has abnormal oil pressure or shows a new cylinder-specific pattern, stop treating the symptom as “just the cam.”
3 · TEST HARDWARE BEFORE TUNING AROUND IT
- Inspect for unmetered air, exhaust leaks ahead of the front oxygen sensors, damaged grounds, ignition faults and fuel-delivery problems.
- Use scan/log data to compare RPM, MAP/MAF behavior, fuel trims, misfire behavior and commanded/actual operating state under the condition that fails.
- A calibration can hide or amplify a hardware problem; do not use tune edits as the first diagnostic test.
4 · ISOLATE CALIBRATION VS PHYSICAL FAULT
- If the problem appeared immediately after a known calibration change, compare against the last known-good file and hardware list.
- If the same tune ran correctly before the complaint, prioritize new mechanical/electrical faults before blaming the cam profile.
- If hardware changed without matching calibration data, restore correct characterization/calibration before judging drivability.
DO NOT REPLACE YET
Do not order coils, oxygen sensors, a MAF, injectors or a fuel pump because a cammed car idles poorly. Prove the failed branch first.
PARTS VERDICT
A part earns a replacement verdict only after a physical or electrical test proves it. If the hardware tests correctly and the issue follows a calibration/configuration change, the verdict is calibration work—not a parts purchase.
REPAIR → VERIFY
After repair or calibration correction, reproduce the original idle/load/temperature condition, rescan DTCs and misfire behavior, and confirm the car no longer needs an unexplained compensation to stay running.
