2002 Rear Axle: ABS/TCS Sensor Architecture Matters

The rear axle is part of the brake-control system, not just a housing for gears.

APPLICATION: 2002 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am. ABS-only and traction-control configurations use different rear speed-sensing arrangements.

ABS-only architecture

Factory service information describes a single reluctor wheel on the differential carrier with a sensor mounted in the rear axle housing on standard ABS-only configurations.

ABS + traction control

On limited-slip cars with TCS, the rear wheel-speed sensors/reluctor wheels are associated with the axle shafts behind the flanges, allowing individual rear-wheel speed information.

SWAP WARNING

A housing that physically bolts in can still break ABS/TCS operation if the sensor count, reluctor location or axle-shaft hardware does not match the car.

Compatibility gate

  1. Identify whether the car has ABS only or ABS + TCS.
  2. Identify the existing rear sensor/reluctor arrangement before ordering the housing.
  3. Verify the replacement rear is built for that exact architecture.
  4. Confirm brake, parking-brake, torque-arm and driveshaft interfaces at the same time.
  5. After installation, scan all wheel-speed channels and verify ABS/TCS operation.
FPV RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. Do not turn a symptom, DTC or catalog fitment label into a parts order.
