1996 LT1 Misfire / P0300 Diagnosis
1996 adds OBD-II misfire detection to the LT1. The PCM detects crankshaft-speed changes; that detection tells you where to investigate, not which part failed.
Confirm the pattern
- Save freeze-frame/failure records and misfire counters when available.
- Determine whether the miss is cylinder-specific, multi-cylinder, bank-related, load-related, temperature-related or intermittent.
Reference signals come before guessing
- P0335/P0336 and distributor-reference faults can affect misfire interpretation.
- If reference-signal DTCs accompany the misfire, diagnose them before using P0300 as a standalone ignition verdict.
Ignition branch
- Inspect plugs, wires, coil/primary feed and distributor secondary condition.
- Verify distributor ventilation architecture and connections if the complaint changes with heat/moisture.
Fuel / injector branch
- Verify actual fuel pressure under the complaint condition.
- Compare injector electrical behavior and flow rather than assuming a click or resistance check proves correct fueling.
Mechanical / air branch
- Check unmetered air, intake tract and restricted exhaust where the pattern supports it.
- If ignition and fuel are proven, move to compression/valvetrain/base-engine checks.
CAMMED CAR?
- A camshaft can produce rough idle and altered manifold vacuum, but it does not make every increasing cylinder misfire counter “normal.”
- Compare cylinder pattern, load dependence, tune/configuration and mechanical health before accepting or condemning the idle quality.
DO NOT REPLACE YET
P0300 does not prove Optispark, plugs, injectors or a fuel pump. Prove the branch that fails under the same conditions that create the complaint.
AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN
Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
DO NOT REPLACE YET
Do not replace coils, plugs, injectors, sensors or the PCM from a misfire code/count alone. Use the page’s branch tests to prove whether the fault is cylinder-specific, bank-wide, mechanical, fuel, ignition or control-related first.
PARTS VERDICT
A component earns replacement only when the applicable branch test proves that component or its circuit cannot perform correctly. If the evidence points to wiring, fuel delivery, mechanical condition or calibration, repair that cause instead.
REPAIR → VERIFY
Clear only the evidence you intentionally reset, then reproduce the original idle/load/RPM condition. Confirm the misfire no longer accumulates, drivability is restored and no related DTC returns.
FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code, symptom or commonly failed part is not proof by itself.
