LS1 Both-Banks Lean: Modified-Car Failure Tree

A modification-aware isolation tree for lean complaints affecting both banks.

APPLICATION: 1998–2002 LS1 F-body, especially cars with intake, MAF, injector, header, fuel-system or calibration changes. Exact DTC/year strategy still controls.
MODIFIED-CAR / AFTERMARKET EVIDENCE · VERIFY INSTALLED HARDWARE

OBSERVE

Record exact DTCs, both-bank trim behavior, load/RPM conditions, recent modifications and whether the complaint appeared immediately after a hardware or calibration change.

MEASURE

Use exact-year scan data and fuel-system tests. Compare bank behavior and determine whether the condition is global or bank-specific before choosing a component.

ISOLATE

Separate unmetered air, MAF/air-measurement error, fuel delivery, injector/calibration mismatch, exhaust/O2 influence and mechanical faults. Modified intake tract, MAF housing, injectors and tune must be treated as installed variables.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

P0171/P0174 do not prove an oxygen sensor, MAF or fuel pump. Prove which input or physical system is driving the trim correction first.

SEQUENCE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
