1999 LS1 Front O2 Heater Strategy

The 1999 LS1 heater monitor evaluates time to O2 activity after a cold start. That is different from proving the sensor signal itself is biased lean or rich.

APPLICATION: 1999 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1; exact 1999 GM F-car heater-monitor strategy.

Heater code ≠ mixture code

P0135 and P0155 are heater-monitor faults. Diagnose heater power, ground/control, connector condition and harness routing separately from the oxygen-sensing element.

How 1999 detects it

GM describes the monitor as comparing time to HO2S activity against a calibrated value during a cold-start test. A slow-to-activate sensor can be caused by heater-circuit trouble or installation/wiring issues.

Header-car trap

Long-tubes and extensions can alter harness routing and heat exposure. Inspect stretched wiring, melted insulation, pin fit and extension quality before condemning the sensor.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

A heater DTC is not a verdict that the O2 sensing element is bad. Prove the heater circuit first.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A DTC or symptom identifies the next test, not the part to buy.
