LS1 P0420 / P0430 Catalyst Diagnosis Strategy

Catalyst-efficiency codes are monitor results, not permission to replace converters without proving upstream causes and sensor integrity.

APPLICATION: 1998–2002 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1 only where the page states the exact year. Exact-year service strategy controls.
DO NOT REPLACE YET

P0420/P0430 do not prove the converter is the root cause

The PCM evaluates catalyst oxygen-storage behavior using upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor information. Misfire, mixture faults, exhaust leaks, sensor/heater faults and modified exhaust hardware can corrupt the conclusion.

Exact-year gate

Monitor thresholds and enabling conditions are calibration/year specific. This page is an LS1 diagnostic strategy map; use the exact model-year service procedure before publishing or applying a numeric threshold.

OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY

  1. Preserve catalyst code, companion codes and Freeze Frame.
  2. Resolve active misfire, fuel-control, HO2S heater/signal and obvious exhaust-leak faults first.
  3. Confirm the exhaust configuration actually installed and inspect for leaks ahead of or near the monitored catalyst/sensor.
  4. Compare upstream/downstream sensor behavior only under the exact-year monitor conditions.
  5. Prove sensor circuits and engine mixture are trustworthy before condemning catalyst oxygen-storage capacity.
  6. Repair the proven cause and complete the applicable monitor/drive verification.

Modified exhaust checkpoint

Long tubes, relocated sensors, high-flow catalysts, deleted catalysts and calibration changes can change monitor behavior. “It has P0430” is not enough information to issue a parts verdict.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
