Firebird Headlight Motor Grinding / Clicking
A running motor does not automatically mean the complete motor assembly is bad. Separate an internal drive failure from an electrical/control or mechanical problem first.
Before you start
Confirm the page scope above, then work through the published checks in order. Use the linked exact-test procedure whenever this page sends you to one.
Modified car?Check first
This diagnostic path is based on the application shown on this page. If the car has non-stock wiring, calibration, engine-management, fuel-system, cooling-system, security, or other related changes, do not assume the stock path matches the car exactly. Verify the circuit and configuration actually present before using a stock result to condemn a component.

1. Start With the Symptom
Motor audibly runs/grinds but the door does not move correctly: this makes a mechanical drive problem plausible. Aftermarket suppliers document the original plastic/nylon gear as a serviceable failure point and sell replacement brass gears for 1993–2002 Firebirds. That makes the gear worth inspecting, but you still need to open the motor and confirm the damage before ordering parts.
Motor is silent: do not buy a gear based on the common grinding failure. Move to electrical/control diagnosis: fuses, module command, wiring/connectors, grounds, motor circuit and the motor itself.
Door moves partway, binds, sits crooked, or stops mechanically: inspect the linkage, door alignment and mechanism before blaming the motor. GM provides a separate headlamp-door adjustment procedure, which confirms alignment/flushness/height are mechanical service items.
↑ Diagnostic sections2. Understand What the Factory System Does
On the 2002 system, the headlamp-door control module supplies power and ground to each motor to open the doors, then reverses motor polarity to close them. The module has constant battery feeds through the left and right HDLP DR fuses and is grounded at G106. This matters because a dead or erratic door can be caused upstream of the motor.
GM's 2002 lighting diagnosis begins with a system check, stored-DTC review where applicable, a visual/physical inspection, and checks for poor connections or wiring on intermittent complaints. That is the correct mindset before replacing a motor.
3. When a Gear Repair Makes Sense
A gear repair is appropriate when the motor can still operate but inspection shows the internal gear/drive is stripped or damaged and the rest of the assembly is serviceable. Multiple current replacement suppliers list a brass gear specifically for 1993–2002 Firebird headlamp motors. That supports the fitment and the existence of the repair; it does not justify claiming every grinding headlamp has the same cause.
4. 1993–97 vs. 1998–2002
The repair concept spans 1993–2002, but the motor location/electrical connection and service details are not identical across the whole generation. Use the exact-year removal procedure and exact application when ordering components. Do not turn a 1998–2002 video or wiring diagram into a universal 1993–2002 service procedure.
5. After the Repair
Cycle the doors repeatedly and verify they reach full open and full closed positions without binding, abnormal noise, or contact with surrounding panels. If the door gap, flushness or height is wrong, correct the mechanical adjustment rather than forcing the motor to overcome misalignment. On 2002 service information, the intermediate-bracket screws used during door adjustment are tightened to 18 lb-in (2 N·m).
What the Diagnosis Supports
What GM shows: the headlamp-door system uses a control module and reversible motor drive; GM has dedicated diagnostics for inoperative doors and dedicated mechanical door-adjustment procedures. What aftermarket suppliers show: replacement brass internal gears are sold for 1993–2002 Firebird headlamp motors. What this does not mean: that the gear is the cause of every grinding complaint, that a metal gear is a “permanent” fix, or that the motor itself “rarely fails.” Those stronger statements are common online but are not necessary to diagnose the car correctly.
Confirmed Stripped Headlight Gear?
Brass replacement gear option: The linked Amazon listing is a CNC-machined brass headlight-motor repair gear. The seller lists Firebird compatibility but also uses the wording “May Fit Firebird 1993–2002,” so FPV does not present it as guaranteed universal 1993–2002 fitment. Compare your motor/gear design and listing fitment information before ordering.
