Rear Brake Upgrades: Keep the Parking Brake in the Plan

The factory parking brake is mechanical and rear-brake specific; a rear conversion must provide a working mechanical hold system if street function is to be retained.

APPLICATION: 1993–2002 F-body rear brake modifications. Exact year/axle/caliper parking-brake architecture varies; verify the installed system before ordering.

Factory principle

On the late factory rear disc system the parking brake is mechanically actuated and independent of normal hydraulic brake pressure.

Conversion questions

  • Does the new caliper or drum-in-hat arrangement accept the factory cable?
  • Is a different cable or bracket required?
  • Does cable travel match the new actuator?
  • Can the brake hold the car on a grade without hydraulic pressure?

Rear-axle swap questions

  • Wheel-speed sensor compatibility.
  • Brake hose/junction location.
  • Parking-brake cable routing.
  • Rotor hat/axle flange offset.

DO NOT ACCEPT “REAR BRAKES WORK”

A street-oriented rear conversion is incomplete if the hydraulic brakes stop the car but the mechanical parking brake, ABS/TCS requirement or wheel-speed sensing was unintentionally lost.

FPV RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. Compatibility means the whole system works together—not merely that two parts can be bolted together.
