1995 Firebird Rear Defogger Not Working

PAGE SCOPELT11995Use this page only for the model-year/application stated here unless another year is explicitly identified in the published material.

A rear window that stays fogged does not automatically need a switch or new hatch glass. First separate timer operation, electrical feed, grid connections and an actual break in the warming grid.

APPLICATION: 1995 Pontiac Firebird / Formula / Trans Am equipped with the optional rear-window defogger.

1. Confirm Normal 1995 Operation

Press the rear-defogger switch. The indicator should illuminate when the defogger is turned on. The 1995 system automatically turns off after about 10 minutes. If switched on again, the next operating cycle is about 5 minutes. The switch can also turn it off manually.

RESULT
Indicator/timer behavior is abnormal: stay with the switch, timer/relay and feed side. Indicator behaves normally but the glass does not clear: move toward the grid connections and glass element.

2. Inspect the Glass Before Electrical Disassembly

The warming element is printed on the inside of the rear glass. Inspect the grid for visible scratches, cuts, missing sections or damage where something was attached to the glass.

GRID WARNING
Pontiac specifically warns against using a razor blade or another sharp object on the inside of the rear window because it can cut the defogger grid.

3. Check Both Grid Connections

The 1995 service information identifies rear-defogger grid connectors on the hatch glass. Inspect the connections at the glass for looseness, separation, corrosion or previous repair before blaming the timer or grid itself.

4. Separate a Whole-Grid Failure From a Local Cold Strip

5. Verify Electrical Delivery Under Load

If the switch/timer indicates that the defogger is on, verify that the grid is actually receiving electrical power and has a usable return path while the system is commanded on. An unloaded voltage check by itself does not prove that the circuit can carry the grid load.

BRANCH
No usable power at the grid: stay upstream with the timer/relay, circuit feed and wiring. Power and return path are present but part or all of the grid remains cold: the fault is on the glass/grid side.

6. Do Not Replace the Hatch Glass for One Broken Line

A localized grid break is different from a failed timer or a completely open main connection. Pinpoint the open section before deciding whether the grid can be repaired or the glass itself is actually required.

COMPONENT VERDICT
Repair only the branch that failed. A lit defogger indicator does not prove current is reaching the grid, and a fogged window does not prove the switch is bad.

Modified-Car Checkpoint

Window tint installation, decals, aftermarket hatch wiring, audio wiring and prior rear-glass replacement can damage or disturb the grid and its connections. Treat those changes as inspection clues, not automatic causes.
