2002 Firebird Rear Hatch Release Inoperative Diagnosis

A hatch that will not release can be command logic, switch/keyless input, relay/feed, solenoid/actuator or latch load.

APPLICATION: 2002 Pontiac Firebird / Formula / Trans Am with the factory system described. Match options and installed hardware before applying a circuit path.

Try every legitimate command

Compare the interior release and remote/keyless command where equipped. If one works and another does not, the latch/actuator is not automatically the problem.

Verify operating conditions

The factory system applies operating logic to the rear-compartment release. Confirm the vehicle state and command are valid before chasing wiring.

Listen, then measure

An audible actuator click with no release points toward latch/load or weak actuation. No click sends diagnosis toward command, relay/feed, wiring or actuator.

DO NOT REPLACE THE LATCH YET

Prove whether the release actuator is being commanded and whether the latch is mechanically loaded before buying parts.

FPV RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A symptom is a starting point, not a parts verdict.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
