4L60E Runs Hot After Stall-Converter or Transmission Changes
Diagnose rising transmission temperature after a converter, transmission or calibration change without jumping straight to a bigger cooler.
1 · CONFIRM WHEN HEAT RISES
- Record operating condition: idle, cruise, repeated unlocked operation, traffic or load.
- Compare TCC command/slip and shift behavior to the temperature rise so heat generation is tied to an actual state.
2 · CHECK LOCKUP / SLIP FIRST
- A converter clutch that is not applying as intended or is slipping can create heat.
- Do not install a larger cooler as a substitute for diagnosing proven TCC slip.
3 · VERIFY COOLER / LUBE PATH
- Inspect cooler lines, routing, restrictions and any transmission modifications that could affect converter/cooler/lube flow.
- Sonnax notes poorly executed line-to-lube modifications can overfeed the converter and create additional complaints.
4 · MATCH CONVERTER AND CONTROL
- High-stall converter behavior, EC3/PWM strategy and calibration interact. Verify the converter builder/transmission builder requirements rather than assuming stock lockup behavior.
- If heat began immediately after the combination changed, audit the whole combination before replacing isolated parts.
DO NOT REPLACE YET
Do not condemn the converter, valve body, solenoid or complete transmission until command, calibration, fluid condition and the actual hydraulic/mechanical failure state have been separated.
PARTS VERDICT
A cooler is appropriate when additional heat rejection is actually needed and the system is otherwise healthy. A converter, valve-body or transmission repair takes priority when abnormal slip, apply-pressure loss or flow restriction is proven.
REPAIR → VERIFY
After repair, repeat the same driving condition and verify temperature stabilizes appropriately for the combination, TCC behavior is correct, fluid remains healthy and no new shift/TCC complaint appears.
