1998 LS1 Cranks But Does Not Start — Diagnostic Start

Split a 1998 LS1 no-start into power/scan communication, ignition, injector control, fuel pressure and mechanical branches before buying parts.

APPLICATION: 1998 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1. This page is a diagnostic starting architecture; it does not import later-year thresholds.

Start with battery and cranking quality

A no-start tree assumes the engine is being cranked normally. Correct a weak battery, poor terminal connection or abnormal cranking condition first.

Prove fuel pressure

The 1998 LS1 has an exact published KOEO fuel-pressure specification. Measure it; do not use pump sound as a substitute.

Prove ignition and injector command separately

Spark present does not prove injector control, and injector command does not prove spark. Split the branches so one working system does not hide the failed one.

Check theft/security evidence

If security behavior is abnormal, keep theft-deterrent/start-enable logic in the diagnostic path instead of replacing fuel or ignition parts first.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

A crank/no-start symptom does not prove a fuel pump, crank sensor, PCM, MAF or ignition component.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A symptom or DTC identifies the next test, not the part to buy.

Verification trail

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Do not replace the fuel pump, ignition parts, security components, PCM or sensors just because the engine cranks but will not start. First prove which required input—fuel, spark, injector command, synchronization or enable—is missing.

PARTS VERDICT

Replace only the component/circuit that fails its dedicated test. A no-start is a system state, not a parts verdict.

REPAIR → VERIFY

After repair, verify cold and hot restart, confirm the engine starts without extended crank, and recheck for returning DTCs or loss of the same required input.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE

SYMPTOM → TEST → ISOLATE → PROVE → PARTS VERDICT → REPAIR → VERIFY. A code, symptom or commonly failed part is not proof by itself.
