2000 LS1 P0171 / P0174 Lean-Code Strategy

The 2000 PCM monitor proves excessive corrective fuel trim under defined conditions; it does not prove a vacuum leak, fuel pump, MAF or O2 sensor by itself.

APPLICATION: 2000 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1; exact 2000 GM F-car diagnostic parameters.

2000 lean threshold

GM publishes the 2000 P0171/P0174 lean threshold as normalized weighted long-term fuel trim greater than +23.5% under the monitor enable conditions.

Both banks vs one bank

Use the bank pattern. Both banks together point toward shared air/fuel/measurement/calibration causes. One bank points harder toward bank-specific leaks, injectors, exhaust or sensor circuitry.

Fuel pressure belongs early

Low fuel pressure or delivery can drive both banks lean under load even when idle looks acceptable. Measure the system under the complaint condition.

Modified-car checkpoint

Cams, injectors, MAF changes, long-tubes, fuel-system changes and tune errors can all alter learned trim behavior.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

Lean DTCs are a fuel-control result. Prove the cause before replacing oxygen sensors or the MAF.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A DTC or symptom identifies the next test, not the part to buy.
