2000 LS1 Diagnostic Architecture

A year-specific map of what the 2000 PCM monitor can and cannot prove before parts replacement.

APPLICATION: 2000 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1; exact 2000 GM F-car OBD diagnostic-parameter document.

Rationality vs circuit vs system

The 2000 GM document separates rationality tests such as P0101 from circuit-range faults, fuel-trim system faults, injector-driver faults and misfire monitoring. Those categories should not be diagnosed as if they mean the same thing.

Save the operating state

Record freeze-frame/failure information before clearing codes. Many monitors have enable conditions; a fault that appears only hot, at cruise or under load needs to be reproduced in the same state.

Sequence shared faults first

If multiple cylinders or both banks move together, look for shared air, fuel, voltage, ground, calibration or exhaust causes before replacing individual components.

Modified-car checkpoint

On a modified 2000 LS1, document tune, MAF housing, injectors, headers/O2 extensions, fuel system, gearing and converter before using stock-monitor behavior as a parts verdict.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

The DTC identifies what monitor failed. It does not by itself identify the failed component.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A DTC or symptom identifies the next test, not the part to buy.
