1999 LS1 Cooling-Fan Diagnostic Start

Diagnose the 1999 F-car fan system as a commanded electrical system before replacing motors, relays or the coolant-temperature sensor.

APPLICATION: 1999 Firebird / Formula / Trans Am 5.7L LS1. Use 1999 wiring and component information for circuit-level testing.

First prove the overheating complaint

Separate actual coolant-temperature trouble from an indication/gauge complaint and from a fan-only complaint.

Command vs response

Determine whether the PCM is requesting fan operation, then determine whether the electrical system and fan motors actually respond.

Inspect the electrical path

The 1999 factory manual provides fan-motor locations, diagrams, connector information and electrical diagnostic procedures. Use the circuit that matches the car.

Modified-car checkpoint

Tuning can alter commanded fan behavior. Aftermarket fan wiring can bypass factory control. Document both before treating factory behavior as the fault.

DO NOT REPLACE YET

A fan that does not run at the temperature an owner expects is not automatically a bad motor, relay or ECT sensor.

FPV DIAGNOSTIC RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A symptom or DTC identifies the next test, not the part to buy.
