2002 Firebird Cruise Control Inoperative Diagnosis

Cruise that will not set or unexpectedly disengages needs an input-and-command diagnosis, not an automatic module replacement.

APPLICATION: 2002 Pontiac Firebird / Formula / Trans Am with the factory system described. Match options and installed hardware before applying a circuit path.

Verify the complaint

Confirm whether cruise never sets, sets then drops out, or only one switch function is missing. Those are different diagnostic branches.

Check the inputs first

Factory diagnosis begins with the cruise diagnostic system check and includes switch inputs, brake/clutch status, vehicle/engine data and communication. A false pedal-applied input can disable cruise even when the cruise hardware itself is good.

Use disengage history

Where supported by the scan tool, review cruise disengage history before replacing parts. It can show why the controller stopped maintaining speed.

DO NOT REPLACE THE CRUISE MODULE YET

Aftermarket wiring, intermittent connections, pedal-switch faults and enabling-condition problems can all imitate a failed cruise component.

FPV RULE
OBSERVE → MEASURE → ISOLATE → PROVE → REPAIR → VERIFY. A symptom is a starting point, not a parts verdict.

AFTER THE FAILURE IS PROVEN

Use the proven failed branch—not the original symptom—to choose the replacement. Go from diagnosis to the Parts Verdict →
